The CMT Process - an innovative Aluminium welding process for HVACR and repair
Dipl.-Ing Juergen Bruckner. Fronius International
The CMT Process (Cold Metal Transfer) a modified MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding provides an effective solution for performing adaptation of mounts or even repairs on HVACR equipment.
Because of increasing demands in welding technologies for industrial application, there is a strong need for welding processes that are able to fulfil these requirements:
- Good mechanical behaviour spatter free welds.
- The ability to handle the process in all kinds of welding positions.
- Excellent reproduction.
- Good gap bridging ability.
- In more than 5 years of development, Fronius International GMbH has developed a system based on a short arc process which can fulfil all these demands. With the CMT process it is possible to produce nearly spatter free brazing of zinc coated steel sheets and welding of thin aluminium sheets (- 0,3 mm).
For the first time the wire feed movement is included in the control of the whole system. Not only is the wire feed movement a new concept, but also the drive unit and some other parts of the welding system are new and revolutionary. The benefits, the possibilities and first experiences of the CMT- process are shown in this presentation, with the focus on repair and welding of HVAC/R.
ORBITAL TECHNOLOGY
Johann. Obermayer
Orbital welding is the jointing of circumferential seams, where the welding torch circles the tube or the pipe in a pre-defined path, known as an orbit. Hence the name if this particular process.
As the weldments fabricated using orbital technology are ones where it is essential to have reproducible results of very high quality, normally the TIG process ( with or without wire ) is used here.
Advantages of orbital welding process:
- highest quality weldment
- absolutely reproducible results - highest reliability welding
- no need for quality welders
- more economically production through automated welding
- short production times
- also useable on hard to access places
- smallest contamination of the medium with particles
- welding-data documentation
- suitable for construction sites
